The Cumberland High School Community Living/Service Class recently spent time learning about the important role libraries play in our communities. As part of this experience, students visited the Effingham Public Library, as well as libraries in Toledo and Greenup.

During their visit to the Effingham Public Library, the students got to make a little pipe cleaner buddy and take a ride in an elevator. The students not only explored the many resources libraries offer, but also gave back! They created handmade bookmarks and assembled personal hygiene bags to leave for library visitors in need.

We are so proud of our students for showing kindness, generosity, and community spirit. Thank you to our local libraries for welcoming our class and for all you do to serve our communities!

The IHSA Girls Wrestling State Finals will be held at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington on Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28. The doors open to the public at 8:00 AM, and wrestling begins at 9:00 AM. There are two options for tickets: at the stadium and with Ticketmaster. Tickets are $10 per session. The Cumberland boys' varsity basketball team will play in the IHSA Regional semifinals tonight against Central A&M. The 7:30 PM game will be held at Casey-Westfield High School. Parking will be available in the north side parking lot, along the street in front of the school on the south side, or in the south side parking lot by the tennis courts. Admission is $8.00. Mr. Horath's freshman English class concluded their poetry unit with Emily Dickinson Day. Students chose a favorite poem by one of America's greatest poets to explore her use of imagery and rhythm. The class began by reading "Hope' is the thing with feathers". Each student presented his or her poem to the class. Not only did they recite her most difficult poems, but they explained the themes at play!

Key milestones include: Quarter Start Dates: 1st Quarter (Aug 14), 2nd Quarter (Oct 19), 3rd Quarter (Jan 5), and 4th Quarter (Mar 15). Major Holidays (No School): Labor Day (Sept 7), Columbus Day (Oct 12), Election Day (Nov 3), MLK Day (Jan 18), and Presidents' Day (Feb 15). Extended Breaks: Thanksgiving (Nov 25–29), Christmas (Dec 19–Jan 4), and Easter (Mar 24–29). Conferences & Exams: Parent/Teacher conferences are held the evenings of October 20 and 22.
