Dear Community, Students, and Staff of Cumberland Unit #77,
I hope this message finds you and your families safe and well. Today, the Illinois State Board of Education released guidance for schools on the 2020-21 school year.
The State Board of Education 60-page document has been much anticipated and will go a long way toward answering critical questions all of us share about what the 2020-21 school year will look like in terms of in-person learning, scheduling, transportation, wearing masks, social distancing and other measures intended to keep everyone safe and healthy, while also re-engaging students in the learning process.
Right now, we don’t have all the answers to those questions as this document was released to school districts at the same time it was released to the public. Therefore, we kindly ask for your patience as our staff and reopening committee thoroughly reviews this detailed guidance and implements the suggestions into our district’s own transition plan.
The Cumberland School District is aware of the urgent need to communicate to families about what to expect next school year and anticipate releasing our own transition plan by July 20.
Our district has formed a transition or reopening committee and will be discussing options. This guidance will accelerate those conversations, and I’m confident our district can put forth a plan that prioritizes the health and safety of our students while maintaining a dynamic learning environment.
Thank you again for your patience, understanding, and flexibility as our entire district navigated a situation together that none of us could have imagined.
In the upcoming days a “return to school” parent survey will be posted to the school's website www.cumberland.k12.il.us and also on the school district’s Facebook page.
I will be in touch soon. In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy your summer.
Sincerely,
Todd Butler

Dear Parents and Community Members,
If you have not done so already, we would like to encourage you to complete your 2020 Census online at www.my2020census.gov or by phone at 1-844-330-2020.
You must have your Census ID, which was mailed to each household by the U.S. Census Bureau. If you prefer to complete a paper Census, they will be mailed out by mid-April to those who have not yet responded.
The 2020 Census aims to count every individual in the United States, and that includes children. The data collected impacts many aspects of your community, including programs and services that are critical for schools, students, and younger children, such as:
Special education, Head Start, after-school programs and classroom technology.
Food assistance, including free and reduced-price school lunches.
Maternal and child health programs.
Please complete your 2020 Census and help make sure our school district continues to receive adequate federal funding that will help our students grow and thrive.
Remember that if you are filling out the census for your home, you should count everyone who is living there as of April 1, 2020. That includes anyone who is living and sleeping there most of the time — that could include grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the children of friends.
Thank you for your support of our students.
Sincerely,
Todd Butler

Dear Parents and Community Members:
I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well. In order to slow down the spread of COVID-19, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced today that remote learning in Illinois will be extended through April 30.
During this time, on-site learning will remain suspended but our schools’ commitment to learning and education will remain open. Learning will continue for all students - just through a different format.
While it is not ideal, we want to assure you that at Cumberland CUSD #77, our teachers and staff are fully engaged and willing to take on this challenge. We will push forward with remote learning, engaging with students, and continuing with our food distribution program.
I know this is not the school year that any of us imagined, but I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we deal with this unprecedented situation together.
More details will be shared soon with everyone regarding remote learning packets and activities, including dates for returning completed packets and picking up new materials.
As a recap, here are the three priorities for our leadership and planning moving forward:
Priority 1 - Feed and care for the safety, health, and welfare of our students, their families, our teachers and staff, and the community at large.
Priority 2 - Communicate clearly; with organized and controlled messages with staff, students, and our community.
Priority 3 - Provide for the continuity of learning.
It’s important we continue to work together to support our students. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Todd Butler

Cumberland schools have cancelled all extra-curricular activities that are scheduled through March 30.

The Cumberland Backpack Ministry will have food bags (for those students already receiving weekly bags) at school on Monday, March 16, from 2:00-8:00 PM in the same location as the elearning packets: Elementary (cafeteria), Middle School (New Gym Lobby), and High School (Mr. Maynards Office).

Hi this is Todd Butler, Superintendent of Cumberland CUSD #77. This message is for the Cumberland students, parents/guardians, community, and staff.
Due to today's announcement with Cumberland County officials proclaiming a state of emergency existing countywide, we have to cancel school a day earlier than originally planned. Cumberland schools will be canceled Monday, March 16th. This closure along with the Governor's mandatory closure will end March 30th. School will resume Tuesday, March 31st unless there is an extension from the government officials.
We absolutely understand the ripple effect that this school closing will have on our families, community, economy, and most importantly our students.
We have a remote home based learning plan in place so a level of learning can continue. I know for certain that remote home based learning will not be as effective as lessons provided at school in classrooms by our teachers. It is a plan that we will evaluate and revise as needed, and will be ready to implement in similar situations, weather related, or emergency closings in the future.
It is our hope that your student will complete the home based learning plans. The goal and objective of this plan is to keep students thinking, learning, and in a school mindset. The lessons will be provided online, or for the students that do not have home internet access or reliable home internet, a paper and pencil packet will be available. Our elementary students will be working with the pencil and paper copies with some internet options, while most students in middle school and high school will receive assignments sent to their school email if they have internet access at home. Digital copies can be submitted to the students’ teachers upon their completion while paper and pencil copies will be completed and returned to the teachers on Tuesday, March 31st.
Our plan was to distribute the packets while the students were at school on Monday. However, this is no longer a possibility, on Monday, March 16th, the district will be having an all staff inservice from 8:00 to 1:00pm. The buildings will be open from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, so any student who needs items from his/her locker may get those at this time. Elementary students should pick their lesson packets in the grade school cafeteria, middle school students needing paper pencil packets will pick up their lessons at the new gym entrance, high school students needing paper copies should pick those up in Mr. Maynard’s office.
If you or your child have questions with his/her home based lessons please email his/her teachers between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. If you as a parent have questions about the home based learning plan please email me at tbutler@cumberland.k12.il.us.
This is a very fluid, fast changing, difficult time for everyone. Please be patient and remain positive because together we will get through this time, stronger than ever before.
