Blackberry Vine  Rubus alleghenienses

Characteristics

Leaves: green and the edges of them are serrated, compound leaves, stem of the vine has thorns

Flower: pink and white in color

Fruit:  druplets, edible, blackish-red berry, fruit grows around the receptacle which is eaten with the fruit

Vine: green or black with thorns

Form: vine that often bends to the ground

Uses: jams, jellies, pies, cobblers, wine

Habitat: edge of wooded areas

Range: midwestern and eastern  United States

Distinguishing features: the fruit of the blackberry surrounds the receptacle (core) which is eaten, differs from raspberry 

Location: Mattoon, Illinois
